Course Description:
The Society for Airway Management (SAM) is comprised of a multidisciplinary group of health care providers from Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Otolaryngology, Critical Care, and Pulmonology, as well as CRNAs, NPs, PAs, paramedics and nurses. The SAM 23rd Annual Scientific Meeting and Workshop has been developed to feature international experts in the various fields of medicine dealing with airway management. Many aspects of difficult airway management, in a variety of clinical settings, will be highlighted. This course will consist of plenary presentations, small group round table discussions, hands-on workshops, and research poster rounds. Audience engagement will be encouraged with question periods and an audience response system.
The theme of this year’s meeting is: Improving the Safety of Airway Management Across Multiple Clinical Settings
COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of the conference, the participant will be able to:
- Understand the various published airway guidelines (ASA, CAFG, PUMA)
- Learn the important concepts learned from airway registry data in multiple clinical environments (prehospital, emergency department, intensive care unit)
- Describe the different airway management strategies for patients with physiologically difficult airways
- Discuss the different airway management strategies for obese patients requiring sedation outside the operating room
- Understand the importance of timing of intubation in the management of hypoxemic COVID patients
- Evaluate the role of different airway management strategies (face mask ventilation, supraglottic device ventilation and tracheal intubation) in patients with cardiac arrest
- Describe the important airway considerations in the pediatric patient requiring intubation
- Learn the important airway considerations in the parturient requiring intubation
Target Audience: Anesthesiologists, emergency physicians, otolaryngologists, intensivists, trauma surgeons, paramedics, certified registered nurse anesthetists, anesthesia assistants, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and flight nurses and all other allied health professionals involved with airway management should attend.

Deadline: Pre-registration will be closed when space is full or on September 1, 2022, at the latest. On-site registration will not be accepted when space is full, so register early. Please note that on-site registration will be assessed an additional $50 to the published registration fee.
Weather Emergency Policy: While the probability of delay or cancellation of the conference is highly unlikely, we recognize that we are subject to the vagaries of weather. If a weather emergency does occur, and you are in doubt as to whether or not the course will be held, call 508-856-1671 after 6:00 pm on September 14, 2022.
Additional Information: The Office of Continuing Medical Education reserves the right to cancel a program at any time caused by circumstances not under its control. Persons registered in a canceled program will be notified by email, using the email address provided during registration. Registration fees will be refunded for that program is canceled by the Office of Continuing Medical Education. There may be changes in program content caused by circumstances beyond the control of the Society for Airway Management and the Office of Continuing Medical Education.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the essential areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint providership of the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and the Society for Airway Management. The University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
Designation Statement: The University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School designates this live activity for a maximum of 19.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) TM. Participants should claim only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Nursing Accreditation: This offering meets the requirements for up to 23.4 contact hours, as specified by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing (244-CMR 5.04).
Physician Assistants: AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. Physician assistants may receive a maximum of 19.5 hours of Category 1 credit for completing this program.
Nurse Practitioners: American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by the ACCME.
