About our Accredited Fellowship Programs

UMass Chan Medical School offers well balanced fellowship programs in many specialties. Here, you will complete the requirements for specialty board certification or a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ), develop professionally for careers in a changing health care delivery environment and provide progressively responsible clinical care under expert faculty supervision. Abundant basic science and clinical research opportunities are also available.

    The mission of the Abdominal Imaging Fellowship is to train well-rounded abdominal radiologists, scholars, educators and leaders who can provide outstanding care to advance the health and well-being of patients, contribute to advancing medical knowledge, and achieve their career goals in supportive and collegial environment.

  • Addiction Psychiatry →

    Addiction Psychiatry

    The mission of the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship is to educate and train psychiatrists to become experts in the biological basis of addiction, to prepare them to provide care to patients with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, and to empower them to be advocates for their patients in health care settings as well as in the community.

  • Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine →

    Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine

    The mission of the Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine Fellowship is to educate and train the next generation of intensivists with a focus on a multidisciplinary approach to patient care in the perioperative setting. Fellows will gain the tools to become leaders in the field with the ability to practice in a variety of ICU settings in either an academic or private practice environment.

    The mission of the Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship is to train cardiologists who are excellent clinicians, educators and investigators while providing outstanding care for the diverse population of central Massachusetts.

    Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

    The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship is designed to develop the careers of well-rounded child and adolescent psychiatrists who can address the needs of children and their families across a variety of clinical, educational, research and administrative settings.   • Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology →

    Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology

    The mission of the Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship Program is to train fellows to become competent and confident clinical cardiac electrophysiologists.  The program provides exposure to all aspects of clinical electrophysiology including the evaluation and diagnosis of cardiac dysrhythmias, treatment and post-op care.  Fellows will combine this experience with active didactic education and attendance and participation in local, regional and national education forums.  Our program also offers fellows with the opportunity to explore clinical research and pursue leadership roles within the diverse and high-volume cardiac population of Central Massachusetts.

  • Clinical Neurophysiology →

    Clinical Neurophysiology

    The mission of the Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship is to educate and train well rounded, competent neurologists with expertise in electromyography, nerve conduction studies, electroencephalography and additional training in the broad area of clinical neurophysiology. Fellows will train in a supportive, scholarly and collegial environment that will prepare them for careers in general or academic neurology, while providing outstanding care particularly to patients with neuromuscular or epilepsy conditions.

    Colon and Rectal Surgery

    The mission of the Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship is to provide exceptional, state-of-the-art care for our patients while educating medical students, residents and practicing physicians. We aim to advance the field of colorectal surgery through research and investigation and by serving as an educational resource and advocate for the Central Massachusetts community.

  • Cytopathology →

    Cytopathology

    The mission of the Cytopathology Fellowship Program is to prepare fellows to excel in the field of diagnostic cytopathology.  Depending on the fellow, training can be tailored toward academics or technology development.  The cell biology basis of cytology is emphasized, and our institution is at the forefront of advanced live cell imaging techniques.  Fellows assist with stat diagnosis of microbiopsies for a wide variety of specimen sources.  The program is unique in that it offers strong training in cytopathologist-performed ultrasound-guided FNA, and technology development relating to biopsy devices and specimen processing.

  • Dermatopathology

    The mission of the Dermatopathology Fellowship Program is to train fellows to become competent, independent practicing dermatopathologists. The program provides qualified education in all aspects of dermatopathology, including histopathology, clinical dermatology, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, molecular pathology and microbiology. Participation by fellows in teaching and research activity is also required to provide experience and develop expertise.

    Emergency Medicine (EMS)

    The mission of the Emergency Medicine (EMS) Fellowship is to educate and train future EMS medical directors and leaders in prehospital medicine through didactics, administrative oversight of EMS and the clinical experiences of caring for a diverse population of patients in Central Massachusetts.

    The mission of the Medical Toxicology Fellowship is to improve the future of toxicology through progressive research, clinical practice and education. Our team aims to keep its work fresh and cutting-edge, while providing patients with the best, most compassionate care possible.

    Endocrinology

    The mission of the Endocrinology Fellowship is to develop endocrinologists of superior caliber and skill in both critical thinking and evidence-based decision making so as to lead next-generation efforts in advancing the health and well-being of all people through endocrine clinical care, teaching, service and research. Fellows will achieve their career goals in a supportive and collegial environment while providing outstanding care to advance the health and well-being of the diverse population of Central Massachusetts.

    Family Sports Medicine

    The University of Massachusetts Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship mission is to provide a well-rounded ACGME accredited experience that will train primary care physicians in the best principles, practice, clinical research, and teaching of primary care sports medicine. The program strives to graduate physicians who will become leaders in advancing the specialty of sports medicine with their patients, community, regionally, and when possible nationally.

  • Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery →

    Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery

    The mission of the Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship is to educate and train fellows to deliver high quality, prompt, accessible, cost-effective and compassionate care to the diverse population of women in central Massachusetts who suffer from pelvic floor disorders. Fellows are an intrinsic part of our team alongside the physician and nursing faculty of our division while being trained to be the next generation of well-rounded clinicians, educators, researchers and leaders in the field.

  • Forensic Psychiatry →

    Forensic Psychiatry

    The mission of the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program is to educate and train psychiatrists for proficiency in forensic evaluation and risk assessment. Fellows provide clinical care for those involved in the criminal justice system, and are also actively engaged in teaching, scholarly activities, administration and patient advocacy activities.

  • Gastroenterology →

    Gastroenterology

    The mission of the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program is to train and prepare fellows to practice independently as consultants in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology.  This entails possessing a broad range of, skills including the ability to generate a relevant differential diagnosis.  Performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and developing the skills to perform these procedures. Fellows participate in lectures and research projects, have the opportunity to teach other trainees and provide various clinical services at a high-volume academic medical center as well as in a community-based hospital settings.

  • Geriatric Medicine →

    Geriatric Medicine

    The mission of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program is to provide a comprehensive educational experience in the discipline of geriatric medicine, in a supportive environment of scholarship, integrity and critical thinking.

  • Hematology/Oncology

    The mission of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship is to educate and train learners in a collegial and supportive environment, to be clinically competent in the care of patients with benign and malignant hematologic disorders and neoplastic disorders; be competent in the procedural and technical skills required in the evaluation and care of these patients; and to acquire skills necessary for the critical evaluation and interpretation of basic and/or clinical research in the field.

  • Hematopathology

    The mission of the Hematopathology Fellowship Program is to prepare fellows to excel in the field of hematopathology and to successfully pursue academic or community hospital careers. Fellows see a wealth of cases within the largest health care system in central Massachusetts, which is the home of the only stem cell transplant program in the region. Fellows also gain extensive experience in flow cytometry, cytogenetics, molecular diagnostics and special hematology and are expected to actively participate in teaching and research.

    Hospice and Palliative Medicine

    The Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship is dedicated to training generations of palliative care experts to provide compassionate, evidence-based, interdisciplinary care for seriously ill patients and their families to improve quality of life and reduce physical, emotional and spiritual suffering. We mentor fellows as servant-leaders committed to teaching, program growth, quality improvement and research to grow the field of palliative care locally, regionally and nationally.

    Interventional Cardiology

    The mission of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program is to provide cutting-edge care for patients with cardiovascular disease, utilizing evidence-based medicine and state-of-the-art interventional technology. Fellows will be trained within the diverse and high-volume cardiac population of Central Massachusetts.

    Maternal Fetal Medicine

    The mission of the Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program is to educate and train fellows to deliver high quality, prompt and compassionate care to the diverse population of women with high-risk pregnancies and certain medical conditions in Central Massachusetts.  Our division is devoted to training fellows in a supportive and collegial environment to prepare the next generation of well-rounded clinicians, educators, researchers and leaders in the field.

    The mission of the Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship is to train well-rounded surgeons, clinicians, educators and scholars who are highly skilled and can achieve their career goals within a collegial, supportive, scholarly environment while providing outstanding care to advance the health and well-being of our diverse patient population.

    Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine

    The mission of the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship is to provide a supportive, scholarly and collegial environment for education and training that allows fellows to become successful academic neonatologists, with expertise in clinical neonatology, through our structured curriculum, clinical teaching and/or research.

    The mission of the Neuroradiology Fellowship Program is to provide an in-depth, comprehensive neuroimaging experience, and expose fellows to research, quality assurance methods and leadership initiatives. Fellows train in a supportive, collegial, tertiary care hospital setting that enables them to provide outstanding health care, contribute to advancing medical knowledge and achieve their career goals.

    The Orthopedic Hand Fellowship aims to provide a comprehensive hand surgery training experience through clinical, didactic and research experiences. We recruit and retain faculty who are dedicated to training future hand surgeons. We believe in education over service. We pride ourselves on graduating highly capable and compassionate hand surgeons who are ready for independent practice in any setting.

    Orthopedic Sports Medicine

    The Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship provides a comprehensive sports medicine training experience through clinical, didactic and research experiences. We recruit and retain faculty who are dedicated to training future surgeons. Superior education is the primary goal of the program. Fellows will graduate as highly capable and compassionate sports surgeons who are ready for independent practice in any setting.

    Pediatric Emergency Medicine

    The mission of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) fellowship program is to provide training in the care of acutely ill and injured children, and to produce graduates that are not only competent in emergency care, but also proficient educators and leaders in the field of pediatric emergency medicine. Through direct patient care, trainee education, and scholarly activities, our fellows will be meaningful members of the UMass community, and contributors to the overall mission of the medical school.

    The mission of the Pulmonary Critical Care Fellowship is to develop physicians with a passion for clinical care, education, quality improvement and research, who will become tomorrow’s leaders in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Fellows in our premier program will be provided with numerous opportunities to achieve excellence in patient care, scholarship, innovation and leadership.

    Renal Medicine / Nephrology

    The mission of the Nephrology Fellowship Program is to foster excellence in patient care, education and research. We train our fellows to be well-rounded clinical nephrologists, prepared for careers in academic, general or transplant nephrology and committed to being lifelong learners and educators.

    Rheumatology

    Our mission is to provide rheumatology trainees with a broad foundation in all aspects of rheumatology and the appropriate skills required for a successful career in academic rheumatology or clinical practice.

  • Selective Pathology (Breast/Gyn)

    The mission of the Selective Pathology Fellowship is to train fellows to become competent, independently practicing pathologists who are prepared for careers in large academic hospital settings or private practices. Our institution is affiliated with a large tertiary care medical center, with an accredited cancer center, and a large referral pool. Our program provides trainees with a large and diverse selection of cases, as well as research and teaching opportunities. Our program’s mission is aligned with to the larger mission of the institution.

  • Vascular Neurology

    The mission of the Vascular Neurology Fellowship Program is to educate and train neurologists to become proficient in clinical, scholarly, humanistic domains of contemporary cerebrovascular neurology. Fellows receive mentored exposure to the varied and complex pathologies throughout the temporal spectrum of neurovascular disease. We aim to provide fellows with a supportive, scholarly and collegial environment in which to provide outstanding neurological care while improving the health and well-being of our diverse patient population in central Massachusetts.
