Supportive Ecosystem
Our department currently has more than 30 labs with over 200 postdoctoral fellows, research associates, graduate students and staff. Our faculty is constantly collaborating with other departments and research centers to advance our scientific knowledge. Companion programs in Chemical Biology, RNA Therapeutics, and Gene Therapy portend new opportunities in translational research for our faculty and students.
The faculty in our department have wide ranging collaborations both within the university and without the broader research community including those in academia and industry. Our faculty have also played an important role in fostering the next generation of biopharmaceutical companies. Companies founded by our faculty included Voyager Therapeutics, Padlock Therapeutics, and Alnylam Pharmaceuticals.
Career Outcomes
Biochemistry and Molecular Biotechnology graduate students often go on to do postdoctoral research upon completing the graduate program. Students and postdoctoral researchers generally pursue careers in academic, industry, and government research, and in fields from high school science education to intellectual property law.

Partnership Opportunities
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biotechnology (BMB) at UMass Medical School encourages novel research to develop new biological therapies for diseases ranging from cancer to inflammatory diseases and from infectious to neurodegenerative diseases. As a part of its mission, BMB applies knowledge flowing from its latest biomedical discoveries, to develop new ways to treat diseases, and drive those therapies into the clinic. Our past efforts have resulted in the generation of several startup companies, including Padlock Therapeutics and Voyager Therapeutics. From the Mass Pike:
Eastbound: At exit 10, take I-290 east to exit 21, turn right at end of ramp and follow Plantation Street south. Take a left at the 3rd light onto South Rd into the campus. The visitor garage will be the right, the ASC building will be on the left (across from the garage entrance way).
Westbound: At exit 11, turn left onto Route 122 north for one mile, turn right at the third light onto Sunderland road, left at the first light onto Lake Avenue for 2.5 miles and cross Route 9. Make a U-turn at the second break in divider, then turn right into campus. The visitor garage will be on the left, the ASC is further up on the right just pass the visitor garage.
From I-495:
Northbound: At exit 23, take Route 9 west. Follow Route 9 west approximately 11 miles.
After crossing the Lake Quinsigamond Bridge, take the first right onto Lake Avenue. Make a U-turn at the second break in divider, and then turn right into campus. The visitor garage will be on the left, the ASC is on the right just pass the visitor garage.
Southbound: At exit 25, take I-290 west to exit 22, turn right at end of ramp, at second traffic light turn left onto Plantation Street and proceed south. Take a left at the 4th light onto South Rd into the campus. The visitor garage will be the right, the ASC building will be on the left.
From I-190:
At the merge with I-290 Shrewsbury exit (watch for the exit ramp on the left), take I-290 east to exit 21, turn right at the end of the ramp and follow Plantation Street south. Take a left at the 3rd light onto South Rd into the campus. The visitor garage will be the right, the ASC building will be on the left.
From I-290:
