Neurobiology of Addiction Research Center

The Neurobiology of Addiction Research Center (NARC) represents the basic and translational research division of the University of Massachusetts Medical School Center of Excellence in Addiction. The research programs of NARC faculty cover a broad range of state-of-the-art approaches to address critical issues related to the neurobiological underpinnings of addiction. While we are particularly strong in research investigating nicotine addiction, we also have strengths in opioid, alcohol and cocaine research. NARC research, supported by over $8 million in NIH funding, spans the spectrum from individual genes to whole organisms. We employ a powerful transdisciplinary approach including molecular, biophysical, behavioral, biochemical, genetic and imaging analyses with the goal of understanding the genetic components, circuitry and behavioral aspects of addiction. NARC research continues to make substantial contributions to the scientific foundation necessary for designing new strategies for the treatment of addiction.
