We train our residents to be well rounded Internists, prepared for careers as clinicians in Primary Care, Hospital Medicine, or fellowships in medical subspecialties; to be educators, researchers and administrators.  Our program strives to achieve the appropriate balance between service and education, in part by minimizing resident involvement in activities of limited educational value.

Our program has articulated four Core Values: Professional Development, Community, Diversity and Innovation.

  • Professional Development: a strong focus on professionalism and the physician’s role in society
  • Community: emphasis on team learning, wellness, interpersonal skills and a particular focus on interprofessional care models. We encourage a flattened hierarchy within our program.
  • Diversity: of patients, curriculum and people. Our program includes gifted learners from diverse backgrounds; top candidates from LCME, Osteopathic and International institutions, and our own UMass Chan graduates.
  • Innovation: the program is built and run on a LEAN based process improvement platform. Physician leaders, office staff and residents are all active participants in continuous process improvement.

Our academics are rigorous and our expectations are high. At the same time, our residency program and its teaching venues provide a nurturing and supportive learning environment. We are proud of our mission and the superb clinicians who graduate from UMass Chan. We welcome you to join our team!
