Speaking of "IBD-AID"

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an autoimmune disease characterized by a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract.  Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, and Indeterminate Colitis all fall within IBD.

IBD is a terrible disease, and can seriously impact quality of life.  Symptoms include abdominal pain, cramping, urgent and frequent (sometimes bloody) diarrhea, bloating:  all things that make life for the IBD patient very difficult.

Here at UMMS, we developed an evidence-based diet for IBD, directed at helping patients with symptoms of IBD, and to assist with healing the gut. Our hypothesis, which we are now testing in research, is that this diet helps to restore balance between helpful and harmful bacteria, while supporting healing by promoting good nutrition.  The hard part of the diet is avoiding those foods that promote growth of pathogenic (bad) bacteria:  sugary sweets, lactose, wheat, corn, and some starches.
