Care of Patients with Opioid Use Disorder

DATA Waiver Course for Students

The Center for Integrated Primary Care is proud to offer an online, asynchronous course designed for schools interested in preparing health-professions students to improve their knowledge and understanding of the care of patients with opioid use disorder. 

This course, funded by SAMHSA grant 1H79TI081671*, has been endorsed by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). ASAM is one of the organizations named in federal law as eligible to certify training as meeting DATA waiver (Drug Addiction Treatment Act) requirements for all 50 states. Medical students who complete this course will be eligible to receive their DEA-X number for use in any state in which they are licensed; nurse practitioner and physician assistant students need to take an additional 16 hours of approved training.

During the 2019-2020 academic year, this curriculum was deployed at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and is now a graduation requirement.  It will be implemented at Tufts University, Boston University, Harvard University, and the Graduate School of Nursing at UMass Worcester during the 2020 - 2021 academic year.

The course takes 8 hours to complete and is comprised of 12 modules. It is designed to deploy in your school’s Learning Management System.  We recommend that students complete modules 1-4 in sequence.  The remaining modules can be completed in any order.
