The Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing at the UMass Chan Medical School is a dynamic academic community where staff, students and faculty come together to advance the mission of preparing nurse scientists, advanced practice nurses, nurse educators and nurse leaders who will improve the health and well-being of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and beyond.
Our community of scholars, educators and learners strive to promote human dignity in all our endeavors. We acknowledge that to truly promote human dignity, we must recognize all dimensions of diversity and appreciate openness to differences in attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors. We strive to interact with difference around and among us with respect, kindness and trust. We believe in compassion and integrity. We hope that all our relationships are strengthened through our desires and actions to fully recognize, understand and make use of the contributions of others. As the Dean of the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing at UMass Chan Medical School I am honored to join a distinguished faculty whose vision of creating a community of health, discovery and human dignity speaks to its devotion to improving the health and well-being of people through research and scholarship, while preserving the dignity of those that they care for.
The mission of the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing is to prepare nurse scientists, advanced practice nurses, nurse educators and nurse leaders who together will improve the health care of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and beyond.
I wanted to study nursing as I’ve been grateful to work with some amazing nurses who care for patients and their families with compassion, dedication, and tremendous heart. That compassionate heart of nursing can impact patients in such a powerful way. I wanted to help contribute to that impact, and I’m grateful the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing at UMass Chan Medical School gave me the opportunity to begin my own path in nursing.

Word of mouth initially drew me to UMass Chan Medical School, because of the focus on the needs of vulnerable populations locally and globally. The Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing PhD program gives me tools to pursue research I’m passionate about - even if that changes now that I’m enrolled.
