Research on Retinal Diseases

Our lab focuses on the genetic, epidemiological and behavioral underpinnings of macular degeneration and macular dystrophies and finding new therapies. We aim to find the causes, prevention and treatments for these diseases. Our studies provide insights into why the disease occurs in some people and not others, why it progresses to advanced stages in a subgroup of those affected, and how to prevent and delay its progression to reduce the burden of visual loss. Our results have been incorporated into the current management of patients with AMD, and have also led to new targets for therapies determined by the underlying genetic and lifestyle characteristics of patients, which are being tested in clinical trials.
