Professional Staff with Faculty Appointments

(See APP, Section 6.2)

Individuals who are employed by UMass Chan Medical School or UMMHC in a staff position may be appointed to the faculty based on their expected contributions to UMass Chan Medical School educational and research programs. 

This category includes, but is not limited to, professional staff and administrators, medical, nursing or other health professionals, clinical fellows participating in non-ACGME approved fellowship programs, chief residents who have completed residency training, and retired UMass Chan Medical School Faculty who been approved for post-retirement employment.

Note: Residents and Fellows in ACGME-approved programs and Postdoctoral Associates are not eligible for a UMMS faculty appointment.

Appointment

Individuals are appointed for a one-year term on recommendation by the chair or GSN Dean (as applicable) and approval through the procedures for appointment and promotion. Individuals may be appointed or promoted to the ranks of Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor, according to the eligibility and criteria for these ranks.

Reappointment

Individuals may be reappointed annually on review and recommendation by the chair or GSN Dean and approval by the SOM Dean (if applicable) and Provost or their designee.

Resignation

Individuals may resign their faculty appointment on prior written notification to the chair or GSN Dean (as applicable) at the earliest possible opportunity, but at least 90 days prior to the effective date of resignation.

Termination

The faculty appointment of an individual in a staff position may be terminated at any time by the chair, SOM Dean, or GSN Dean (as applicable) on prior written notification to the individual at least 30 days in advance of termination of appointment. The faculty appointment of an individual in a staff position ends coterminously with termination of their employment by UMass Chan Medical Schoolor UMMHC.
