Narrative Statement: Associate Professor, Non-Tenure Track

Candidates for appointment or promotion to Associate Professor in the Non-Tenure Track must demonstrate all of the following (Section 3.8.b):

  • Established level of achievement in an Area of Distinction;
  • Entry level of achievement in at least two other categories; and
  • At least Entry level of achievement in Education
    (Note that Education is one of the two categories required at Entry level unless Education is the primary Area of Distinction.)

How do these criteria translate to your situation?
This guide describes some examples. Look through the examples below to identify the scenario that best fits your achievements and distribution of effort.

Primary Area of Distinction

All candidates must identify a primary Area of Distinction that provides a unifying theme for their activities, achievements, scholarship, and academic reputation. The candidate selects this area, in consultation with their Chair or Division Chief, and the Area is identified on their Faculty Status Form, which is the cover for the Basic File.

In addition, candidates must have two other categories at Entry level or higher; Education must be included as a category. Unless specified otherwise on your Faculty Status Form or in your narrative statement, review committees (DPAC and PAC) will evaluate achievements in your primary Area of Distinction, Education and Academic Service.

The following scenarios apply to faculty with only a primary area of distinction:
