Admission Criteria
Applicants must submit a completed application to Nursing CAS by the deadline date to be considered for admission. Application status emails will be sent to the email provided on the application via NursingCAS. Applicants are encouraged to submit completed applications by priority deadlines for first-look and review. See application deadline dates below.
NursingCAS application opens August 15, 2022 for the Fall 2023 Admissions Cycle.

Applications will not be reviewed until all application materials are submitted.
- Completed Application should be submitted to NursingCAS (go to APPLY NOW). Please refer to Nursing CAS instructions application requirements.
- Once an application is submitted to the school, applicants will receive an e-mail to pay the UMass Chan Medical School Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing required application fee of $100 online. (this application fee is different than the NursingCAS fee)
All applicants must:
- Completed Application submitted no later than the deadline date, which includes paying the $100 application fee online
- Undergraduate GPA 3.0 or higher
- CPR Certification for Health Providers (BLS) by the American Heart Association
- Current Resume/CV
- Qualified applicants will interview with faculty
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) results are needed for those applicants whose language of instruction was not English. Scores above 250 on the computer test or 600 on the paper test or 100 on the internet-based test is recommended.
- GRE's are not required for all programs

Prerequisites
- Anatomy & Physiology I with Lab (taken within five years grade B- or higher)
- Anatomy & Physiology II with Lab (taken within five years grade B- or higher)
- Microbiology with Lab (taken within five years grade B- or higher)
- College Level Statistics Course (no limit grade B- or higher)
- Nutrition Course (taken within 5 years grade B- or higher)
- Human Growth & Development Across the Lifespan Course (taken within five years grade B- or higher)
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
BSN to DNP Track- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
- Evidence of unrestricted Massachusetts licensure as a registered nurse
- Associate's degree or diploma in nursing and a bachelor's degree or higher in another non- nursing discipline
- Evidence of unrestricted Massachusetts licensure as a registered nurse
- A Master’s degree in nursing and certified as NPs, CNSs, CRNAs, or CNMs or hold a Master’s degree in nursing or a health related field for nurse administrators.
- Master's Degree in non-nursing field is acceptable for applying Nurse Administrators (must have bachelor's of science in nursing degree)
- Evidence of unrestricted Massachusetts licensure as a registered nurse
- College Level Statistics Course (no limit grade B- or higher)

On-Line Post Masters DNP
- Completed Personal Statement (see Nursing CAS for further instructions)
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
- Two letters of recommendation, from persons whom you have been in contact within the last five years: (1) A recent supervisor who can evaluate APN (Advanced Practice Nurse) or nurse administrator employment experience, (2) A professional reference from a Masters or Doctoral prepared nurse who can speak to your potential for academic success and can evaluate your leadership potential as an APN or nurse administrator with a DNP. submitted to Nursing CAS
- Evidence of an unrestricted license Massachusetts licensure as an RN
Master of Science: Nursing & Interprofessional Leadership
- Application fee waived for admission cycle 2022
- Bachelor-prepared Registered Nurse or Post-Graduate RN with a BS in another field
- Current MA nursing license
- 2 or more years of nursing practice experience
- Official transcripts from all post-secondary schools
- Personal Goal Statement. A 1,000-word essay explaining your personal and professional decision to pursue this nursing specialty and your 5-year career plan after graduating from the program.
- 3 Letters of recommendation from people you were in contact with during the last five years. 1 academic (from a former faculty member), 1 professional, and 1 from a professional nurse recently responsible for evaluating your nursing practice.
Pre-Requisites: Within 5 years
- College Level Statistics Course (taken within five years grade B- or higher)
PhD Program
Additional Admission Criteria for Post DNP to PhD- DNP degree
- 2 letters of reference – 1 must be from the DNP project advisor or equivalent
- Pre-Requisites:
- Graduate course in Statistics/Data Analysis
- Graduate course in Health Policy
- Proficiency using SPSS or other data analysis software is preferred (workshop may be required)
Certificates
- Applicants must be practicing NPs with an MS or doctoral degree who are certified as Adult, Gerontology, Adult-Gerontology Primary or Acute Care, Family or Pediatric NPs. Refer to fact sheets for any certificate specific requirements if any.
- Evidence of unrestricted Massachusetts licensure as a registered nurse
- College Level Statistics Course (no limit grade B- or higher)
